I think that translation is the best way of building bridges between languages and, above all, people. I have always loved it with all my heart, and I was always interested in experiencing and understanding new cultures. One of the reasons why I became fond of translation is the strong focus on the human being and human interaction that is at the core of this profession – to be able to produce a proper piece of work, any translator needs to interact with other people (most likely other translators or native speakers). This is what I like about the world of translation: it is not only related to the mere task of transposing a text from one language to another, but it relies deeply on the care that one must put into that work. And reading one translation, one can always tell how much care and passion the translator has put in it – it is clearly a job to bring the world closer, and every good and passionate translator knows it. I also think that, at the end of the day, translators can be compared to construction workers: society might not consider the job to be important or prestigious (compared to other ones), but if nobody did it there would be no houses to live in.

Translating means bringing people closer to one another through conveying a message in different languages. Although, translation is not only a matter of choosing the right word or using the appropriate vocabulary; the ultimate goal of translation is making sure that the translated text has the same effect as the source text. To do this, a number of elements must be taken into account, culture above all - it doesn’t matter how good a translation is, if there are cultural errors or inaccuracies, the text’s goals will not be fulfilled. And this is why translation is so important: not only it allows to spread ideas, concept and knowledge; it does it adjusting them in a way that is intelligible to audiences that are always different among themselves and that evolve with time.

Translation is transposing a written message into another language. Interpreting is the oral rendering of a message into another language. It is worth noting that both translation and interpreting go far beyond replacing words in another language: they always work on adapting a message to suit the target culture expectations and perceptions.

Although free online translators may be useful to get a gist of the text, they can never be as accurate as a human translator, especially when it comes to conveying the meaning and feeling of the source text – machine translators don't take into consideration the context and cultural background of a text, which means that the text is stripped of all the cultural elements it should convey. To better understand this, it is worth saying that online translators don’t actually know all the languages in the world: they usually translate words into English first and then into the target language, which means that the words are decontextualized and a lot of information is lost. Also, these tools break the text down into sentences and the sentences into smaller segments, and works with that – again, a lot of information is lost, because sentences often make sense thanks to the fact that they’re all linked to each other. Translation is about making people see and feel what the author of the text saw and felt while writing the text; translators knows this very well and are able to go beyond the literal meaning of the source text expression. Online translators, on the other hand, draw on the same technology that the regular search engines use, with the addition that it cuts the sentence into segments that are then researched automatically on the web; this process results into drawing from sources that are completely random and are not chosen for how appropriate they are depending on the purpose of the translation. In short, one should consider if a fast and cheap translation is worth the risk of losing the meaning of the text.

On average, a translator can handle 2000-3000 words a day, although this can vary depending on the type of content and the degree of specialisation of the text. For this reason, deadlines will be negotiated with the client depending on the kind of text and on the degree of specialisation.
